Pokemon C-Watch

This is ridiculous. These watches are insanely cool and at the time of writing this, I can't find a single website documenting anything about these things. There's not much info to go off of, but I've decided that it's my responsibility as a Charmander C Watch owner that I need to find out what the deal with these things is. If you have information that I don't, please contact me through the sidebar.
Alright, let's go.

Q&A

Q: What is a C-Watch?

A: C-watches are collectible animated watches made by the company Trendmasters. They are digital watches that can do things like play sound, show art on the screen, and set timers and alarms.

Q: What is Trendmasters?

A: Trendmasters are a toy company that started in 1994 with a line of Godzilla figures. They started making C-Watches in 1999, including watches for NSYNC, Austin Powers, Pro Wrestling, Pokemon, Star Wars, and more. They went on to make toys for more companies. In 2002 they were acquired by Jakks Pacific. Jakks Pacific didn’t really do anything too interesting after that.

Q: Is there any more info online about the watches?

A: Nope. There's youtube videos and past listings on various sites. Using any piece of info I can find, I'm going to make as in-depth a document about all of this as I can.

Actually, I discovered the Wayback Machine has some archives of their old website, but it's pretty empty and did not help the search at all. The last archive that was relatively filled with anything can be found here: https://web.archive.org/web/19970418092419/http://www.trendmasters.com/

Research

The first thing I noticed upon looking these up is that there are two versions of the watch. First is the pocket watch, which I will refer to as Rev. 1. Second is the wrist watch, which I will refer to as Rev. 2.

Rev. 1

There were three ways that these were released. They were released as a stand-alone product that came in a plastic packaging, bundled with the US Toys R Us Pikachu N64 bundle, and there seems to be another version of Pikachu that comes in a box labeled "Pokemon Animated Clip Buddy".

This is purely speculation, but the two Pikachu pocket watches seem to actually be different. In the pictures, the back of the packaging shows a Pikachu watch that has streaks of yellow lighting where the design is on the strap. In just about every picture I've seen, though, the Pikachu watch design is Pikachu's tail. I have only found one video (aside from the commercial) proving the existence of the thunder design watch, it only brings more questions than it answers.

The N64 bundle came with a random watch.

Another detail that seems to be lost to time is the numbering. There are watches that have writing for what number the respective Pokemon is in the Pokedex. Where these were distributed is unknown, but the ones with the numbering seem to be more rare than the others since pictures of them were hard to track down.

A post I found on Deviant Art by portal2player says that his Pikachu watch "contains the voices that were used in the show, game, ectra that the watch is based on. example: this one here has ash's voice (season 1) pikachu's voice, james's voice, koffing's voice. ash will literally say what time it is if you press the button on the left of the watch(if it's face is towards you, there is a single button) and a sequence of animations like james saying "koffing, sludge attack!" or so."

No other mention of this watch exists aside from the ebay listing I found with these pictures.

Just like Butterfree, I found no other mention of this watch existing outside of an ebay listing that was active when I got my charmander pocket watch.

Rev. 2

This is the same as the rev. 1 watches, but now on your wrist. They were only sold in stores. If the number of pictures is any relation, these must be a lot more common than the rev. 1 watches.

  8. So I had one of these growing up and I swear it was the Pikachu one. My most permanent memory was the alarm sound of Ash saying "Wake up! It's time to go catch some Pokémon!" over and over. I wanted to revisit this so I bought one on ebay for pretty cheap but the alarm tone only says "Don't let the bed bugs bite!"

    I'm pretty bummed out lol.
